Why Positioning Matters In Creative Business; And How To Know If You’re Screwing It Up.

I’d like to expand on this quote I read from a book I’m reading.

“It is first through positioning our firm that we begin to shift the power in the buy-sell relationship and change the way our services are bought and sold. Positioning is the foundation of business development success, and of business success. If we fail on this front we face a long, costly uphill journey as owners of creative businesses.”

-Blair Enns, The Win Without Pitching Manifesto

Throughout my career I have been in the position of being pitched at by B2B reps. Either because of my title or because I am the actually buyer, I get pitched at a lot.

It’s part of it. That’s ok.

But it’s gotten to the point where when I respond to these folks, I give them one of two responses. I either say, “hmm, I don’t think so.” Or I just tell them how to pitch me.

I feel like it would be better for me in the long run to at least get pitched in the way that I like being pitched.

And it all starts with changing your positioning. If you are positioned as a person trying to get money from me that means I have all the power and I am going to do everything that I can to keep the power.

But if you come in with power, I’ll never have the chance. And that’s doable. There are people I meet, which is true of everyone, that have significantly more power than I do.

When a person has power, I listen. When I have power, people will offer anything they can to make it worth it to me to spend a little bit of time helping them.

You can have this power. But it’s part of who you are. You can become powerful. It doesn’t take money. It doesn’t take a certain number of followers. It doesn’t take a masters degree. It comes from knowing that you — YOU — inherently have power in the first place.

If you need to talk to me about something that’s important to you I am happy to do it. You just have to book a time on my calendar. Torlando.periodic.site
