Are you being honest with yourself about your professional role?

Can I be real a second? For just a millisecond? (Where are my Hamilton fans?) Honesty with yourself is the best thing you can do for your career right now and it can start this second.

If it’s the work day, and you have stumbled upon this entry and are taking time away from your current work task to read this it’s because you aren’t being honest with yourself about what you need to be doing with your time.

It’s easy sometimes to act like reading something is self-improvement and therefor counts as work because you’re sharpening your saw. While I would never say that reading doesn’t sharpen your saw, I would push back and question whether you are reading to sharpen your saw right this instance or are you using it as a sophisticated excuse to procrastinate.

Here’s the secret to avoiding procrastination. Don’t put things on your to-do list that make you want to procrastinate. No one procrastinates on things that matter to them. No one puts off the things they can’t stop thinking about. The things they obsess about.

If your work is leading you to procrastinate, you aren’t being honest about what you need to be doing to move the needle forward.

Being honest with yourself on a daily basis will not only produce the best results but it will make you happy.

Crossing the finish line with a smile 😄 will always win the day over crossing it with exasperation 😫.
